The Key to Successful Goal Achievement – What You Must Master If You Want to Achieve Your Goals

Goal setting is an integral part of the goal achievement process. However, I recently overhead a group of male teenagers talking about the subject of goal-setting or, more specifically, they were talking about the futility of this activity. It was rather sobering listening to them. If these young men were already disillusioned about goal setting and remained of this view, their negative beliefs would almost certainly place them at a disadvantage when it came to goal achievement.

Unless they addressed their limiting beliefs, they were erecting mental barriers that would scupper any attempt to achieve their goals. And this would lead to unnecessary frustration and they would undoubtedly live less than fulfilled lives.

And you may share their views as, while many goals are set, relatively few are achieved.

So why do so many people fail to achieve their goals and how can you dramatically increase the odds that you will achieve the goals you set.

Well, going back to the young men I overheard – I could tell that they hadn’t even given goal-setting any deep thought. They had not truly considered what they wanted to achieve in their lives and with their lives. And many people are like this. They drift through life stumbling from one thing to another but they don’t give a great deal of thought to exactly how they would like to see their live pan out.

When they do set goals they do often do it in a hasty manner and in the wrong frame of mind. People often set goals for the wrong reasons. What’s more, people often do not set goals that are worthy of them, yet the question that runs through their mind either consciously or sub-consciously is:

“Am I worthy of this goal?”

And, in this statement, lies the heart of why so many people fail in their attempt to achieve their goals.

They do not believe they are worthy of their goals and so self-sabotage their attempts to achieve their goals.

The problem therefore lies not with the goal but with the mindset of the individual setting the goal. Or, expressed otherwise, the problem is the individual’s perceived identity.

You know that to achieve your goals you have to take action. The bigger the goal the more actions you have to take and often the bigger and bolder the actions that you have to take. And it’s not just about taking action in an erratic manner. You have to consistently take actions that propel you in the direction of your goal. If you stop you lose momentum and your goals crash and burn.

Yet, time and time again, this is exactly what happens. You abandon your goals. At the time the reasons you give yourself seem very plausible. You may tell yourself that you:

~ Lack time
~ Lack energy
~ Lack money
~ Lack resources
~ Lack connections

But, in reality, these are just excuses and the true reason why you fail to achieve your goals is because there is a mismatch between your identity and your goal.

“We are never able to do anything consistently that it inconsistent with how we see ourselves therefore we fall short of the goal because we did not engage in the action consistently enough… If there is a mismatch between the goal and our identity then our identity will trump the goal because our identity is a dictator of play.”
Stephen Pierce

So what is the key to goal achievement?

It’s clear, isn’t it? You have to ensure that your identity is in alignment with your goals. To achieve this you have work on your mindset as much as you have to work on doing the things that propel you towards achieving your goals.
