Dealing with Colic – Understanding Colic and What You Can Do About It

Colic is often associated with long hours of crying in babies. In fact, one of the main signs of colic is extreme crying for hours that can last for days. The cause of colic is not yet known, but doctors say that colic is a perfectly normal condition that healthy babies undergo.

Although colic is normal and temporary, dealing with colic can be frustrating for parents. Babies crying for hours that sometimes their faces turn red can indeed be alarming for mothers and if you are experiencing such, it is not also wise to conclude that your baby is just suffering from colic. If you have noticed such signs, it is always important to consult the doctor to make sure that the extreme crying is just normal and temporary.

Of course, you have to make sure as well that there are no other signs and symptoms other than the crying. If there is vomiting or fever, then you must go to the doctor as well to check for other underlying conditions.

If your baby is diagnosed with, you have to prepare yourself in dealing with colic and the frustrations that come with it. Most of the time, feeding or carrying your baby in your arms does not calm down a colicky baby. You have to find what ca calm him down.

Rocking him on your arms may do the trick or putting your baby in a swing. If he does not stop crying, you may want to bring him to a quiet room and away from bright lights. You may also bring him away from people as these can also aggravate his signs. There are also techniques in holding your baby that are said to provide him relief. Such techniques include holding your baby in such a way that you are putting a little pressure on their stomach.

You can also lie on your back an d allow your baby to lie on your tummy. A little massage on his back may also help him calm down as well.

Some babies love to ride a car and this sensation may help him calm down. You can also bring him outside for a walk, or play his favorite music. You may have also noticed that he loves to listen to the droning sounds of a fan or vacuum cleaner, thus this can be a solution to calm him down.

Your diet, if you are breastfeeding your baby is also said to affect colic in you babies especially those foods that are gas producing. Eliminating milk products and nuts in the mother’s diet are said to provide relief but of course, you also have to consult your doctor when eliminating certain types of foods in your diet.

Dealing with colic can indeed be frustrating especially if you have done everything to calm him and still you get no results. Despite that, you have to be patient and understand that colic is temporary and does not last long, so take time to care for your baby and make him feel that you respond to his needs as well.
