Guide to Drumming for Beginners
Drumming is a hobby that many people thoroughly enjoy. If you are looking into taking up drumming or even if you are a seasoned drummer you may be interested in learning more about drumming.
The way that drums are made seems to be pretty self explanatory until you take the time to thoroughly look at a drum. Although it may seem like something that would be easy to make they may have more to them than you originally thought.
The most common drums have circular shells. The drumhead is then stretched over the top of the cylindrical base.
Although they are usually cylindrical they often have different shapes in the body. The can be bade in the shape of cones, joined cones and even ovals.
The different shapes of the base will also make different sounds. Different skins will also give you different sounds.
Drums can have openings at one or at two ends of the base. If the drum only has one opening it will make a much different sound than if the drum has two openings.
Some of these percussion instruments are made with wooden bases while some are made with metal. The most common drum that is made out of metal is the Caribbean steel drum.
Some drugs use tension rods which are rods that can adjust how tight the skin on the top of the drum is. The rods are placed in the lugs that are evenly placed around the head of the drum.
Before the tension rods were invented drummers would use ropes connected to the skin and to the bottom of the drum. The ropes were then able to be tightened or loosened at will.
We have discussed how the sound of drums can vary drastically. Depending on the drum there are many different sounds that can come from a drum.
Some of the factors that play into the sound of a drum are the type, shape and shell. The different sounds of the these percussion instruments are used in different types of music.
If you listen to different genres of music you will be able to hear the different sounds of drums. Jazz and rock and roll have vastly different sounding drums.
The jazz drums have a very soft, crisp and clean sound. When you listen to drumming in jazz it usually accents the sounds and the voices of the music.
Rock and roll often has a very different sound. The sound of rock and roll of these percussion instruments is much more pervasive.
The rock and roll percussion instruments are very loud and very deep. Often times the drummers will have solos in rock and roll songs.
To find a drum that has a low pitch and is very loud you need to find a drum with a thick drum head. The thick drum head will keep the sound of the vibrations in the drum for much longer than a thin drum head will.
The tension that is held by the drumhead is another huge factor in determining the sound that a drum makes. If the tension of the head is increased you will hear the reduction of the amplitude and the sound will be much lower.
The shell that surrounds the drum will also have a major effect on the sound of the . The shell of the instrument will control the vibrations within the drum.
If the shell has a large diameter the pitch of the instrument is much lower than if the diameter of the drum is smaller. If a drum is made of mahogany the mahogany will make the frequency of the much higher.
For each genre of music there are certain types of drums that are typically used. If you are interested in a specific type of drumming you may want to ask a drummer that drums in the genre you are interested in.
You will also notice that drums can be played in many different ways. Some drums are played by using your hands.
If you take the time to listen to the different kinds of drums that you are interested in playing you may be able to find a drum that you favor above the rest. Do not invest a lot of money in your first drums because you may decide to play different drums.
Your first set of drums should be inexpensive but also have enough quality to last you a while. If you buy a very expensive set of drums to start with you may end up ruining the drums on accident.
