Ten Swine Flu Facts for Bodyworkers

Swine flu, the currently designated pandemic, is a reminder that our health is, and should be, a primary concern. In these modern times our respective health departments and professions are trying to be on top of the situation, informing us about how to be prepared as well as how to prevent spreading the infection. Massage therapists and other bodyworkers work in close proximity to their clients, which can mean a higher likelihood of transmission if certain safety precautions are not taken.

One of the best ways to avoid transmission is to practice good hygiene. This means washing your hands before and after clients and using alcohol based hand sanitizers. It also means properly using and cleaning lines and disinfecting surfaces such as massage tables and countertops. If you come down with flu-like symptoms, such as a fever, coughing, sore throat, stuffy nose, chills or body aches – stay home. Don’t go into work and expose others to the infection. Likewise, advise clients who may be ill to reschedule appointments.

Remember that the swine flu, though originating in pigs, has mutated to transmit from person to person and is spread though the usual methods, like uncovered coughing and sneezing. It is not spread through the eating of pork.

Another good way to prevent the flu is to keep your immune system healthy by getting enough sleep, regularly exercising and eating a healthy diet. This way, even if you are exposed to the flu, your body will be better able to fend it off. If you suspect you have contracted the swine flu, be sure to check in with your doctor. There are prescription medications that can help to reduce the symptoms.

Taking preventative measures may not give you a 100% surety against getting or transmitting the flu, but they will greatly reduce the chances for both you and your clients.
