Spending Your Tax Refund in the Best Way Possible
The day your tax refund comes in the mail and you rush to open the crisp envelope can certainly be an exciting one. Seeing the amount of money on the check can begin to fill your head with exciting ideas about exactly how to spend it.
While there are plenty of fun ways to spend that money, there are also smart ones that you should consider in addition. The key is balance-spending money on good investments, while having a little fun in the process as well.
Most people do one of two things with their return check-they ever put it in the bank and do not touch it, or they blow it in one day on a large, exciting purchase. While the first option might be conservative and the second option might be fun, that does not not mean that either one is necessarily the smartest choice for you.
Each has their downsides-of course, this also depends on your financial situation before the check comes. Here are some things to consider before you decide where the money is going to go.
First of all, it is ok to have some fun in moderation. Sometimes, you just need to buy that completely impractical item, to make life more fun and interesting.
Instead of making a purchase you cannot afford on a credit card, plan your money in advance and make the purchase without the use of credit. Keeping yourself to a budget when it comes to fun is a good idea.
Think about giving some money to others, if you have the money to be able to do so. This can be an extremely rewarding and fulfilling way to spend a little cash, while making a positive difference in the life of someone else as well.
Create a gift fund from which you can tap into around the holidays for friends and family. The holidays are always a little financially tight, and having that money ready to go can be a real help.
Perhaps now is the time to take a trip. Is there somewhere you have been wanting to go for years but your sensible side has been putting it off?
Plan out your finances, and go on the trip you deserve-everybody needs a vacation every once in a while. Once again, this is no reason to go into debt, but if you can handle it, give yourself some needed rest and relaxation.
Start a fund for repairs for your home. Chances are there are lots of little repairs that you have been putting off for years-now is the time to tackle them.
After all, they can increase the resale value of your home, in addition to the comfort. Replace a breaking appliance, or just save the money for the next thing that goes wrong.
Start a fund for your children’s college. Tuition costs can be very expensive, and the sooner you start saving the better-this may not be the most fun way to spend your money, but it is certainly practical.
If you put it in a special account for the future, it can begin to grow interest as well. If you are looking for a completely unselfish way to get rid of your extra cash, donate it to your church, or to your favorite charity.
Involving your family can be fun and exciting, and teach them about service and charity. In some cases, you can even get a tax deduction for next year.
Last but not least, invest in something that will be fun, and will save you money at the same time. Try getting a digital camera so that you can take your own family pictures, instead of paying a professional.
You could also try getting a reading device on which to view your favorite books and magazines, instead of purchasing them individually. You can come up with lots of creative ways to make smart purchases that will be fun, and while being smart.
Take a look at your needs, your wants, and your budget, and decide how you want to put that tax refund to work. If you are smart about it, you can balance what is fun and what is sensible, and get something that will make you happy.
