Exploring the Different Kinds of Ovens Which are Available to You
Are you tired of cooking in the same old way, night after night? Well, if you trying changing the device you are using, you may change the consistency and quality of your meals altogether.
Believe it or not, there are many more options than just your standard, conventional oven. For example, you could try going the Dutch route.
The original Dutch ovens were three-legged cooking pots, typically made of either heavy cast iron or aluminum, made to be used over an open fire or hearth. There are two basic types.
The first is the outdoor variety made of cast iron, which has three short legs and a tight fitting lid. The second type is similar, but has a flat base and can be used stove top or in your existing kitchen device.
They are extremely versatile, and can be used for anything from roasting and stewing, to frying, steaming, and baking. Keeping one of these with your food storage is a great idea, as you would probably not have electricity or gas in the case of an emergency.
You can even try using a solar oven. They work quite differently than the afore mentioned item.
They are used all over the world in situations ranging from necessity, to more pleasurable pursuits such as their use by people on camping holidays. They use energy from the sun to heat and cook foods, and they work on a similar principal to a greenhouse.
Solar energy is reflected into the cavity of the base, and a glass lid keeps the heat in, allowing the temperature to rise quite rapidly. Well-constructed ones allow you to cook anything you can in a conventional device.
The temperatures reached in solar varieties are virtually the same as in conventional appliances, so the cooking times are similar as well. There are downsides, however.
They tend to be rather high maintenance, in that they need to be turned every thirty minutes or so to gain maximum exposure to the sun’s rays. This also keeps the temperature throughout more constant.
If you get any clouds in the sky, this could delay your cooking time. However, they are very fun to work with, if you have the time and patience.
If you want something that will bring out the rich flavor in something, go with brick. Domestic brick ovens can be used to cook bread, pizzas, and stews, as well as both savory and sweet tarts and pies.
Pizza or bread dough can be laid directly on to the hot bricks. They are also excellent for slower cooked foods like casseroles, too.
As with other types of items that are heated by fire, this one needs to heated, and then allowed to cool so that the temperature in the cavity is even. The advantage to this type of cooking is that it gives a very distinctive outdoor taste, and crisp texture to foods, especially pizza.
The downside is that cooking with any kind of wood fired oven is the exact opposite of microwave cooking, and you’ll need to have plenty of patience. This one is going to take some time.
Even in the range of conventional devices, there are many different options. There are generally three types available, which give various levels of flexibility.
Each type is generally available in both gas and electric models. The most basic type is the single one, with a combined grill.
The oven and grill are intended to be used separately, and these ones have a door switch which changes the heating configuration accordingly. When grilling, the door is left slightly open, and this activates the top heating element.
When the door is closed, it operates using all the available elements to provide even heating. A single one with a separate grill means that you can use the grill at the same time, which gives you a little more flexibility, and can also help speed up the process.
Double ones combine a smaller capacity one with a grill, and a larger device. Double ones have the advantage of letting you cook foods that need different temperatures at the same time.
A good example of this is a roast dinner, with side dishes. Roast potatoes need a much higher temperature than the meat does in order to cook and crisp up properly, so you can cook your roast in the larger capacity one, and the roast potatoes in the smaller one.
There are many other kinds that you can use, if you get creative. Check out your different options today.
