The immediate priority is to correctly diagnose the problem. Is this a question of the CEO’s energy or the team’s awareness of plans for the company? Is there something else going on of which the CEO is unaware?
The best way to diagnose the problem is to meet with employees. Have an open and frank discussion with them about the future of the company.
* Start by listing all employees or key team members from most valuable to least. Meet with the most valuable employees first. Share hopes and vision for the business. Express appreciation for their contributions and discuss plans for their continued growth. Next, ask open-ended questions about the company and seek their input on how to improve it. Listen to what they have to say.
* Next are borderline employees. Again, share the vision and appreciate their past and current contributions, but be honest about expectations for performance. Then ask the same open-ended questions that you asked the first group and listen.
* For underperforming employees, again appreciate past and current contributions, but be clear that unless they substantially improve performance, future employment isn’t guaranteed. Ask the same open-ended questions asked of the other groups and listen.
* In meetings with all employees, as opportunity arises during discussions, develop specific, measurable performance objectives that will benefit both the employee and the company. Make sure that these are documented, with appropriate follow-up review and planning on a regular basis.
One way to kick off this process is to conduct a company workshop to initiate the discussion. The 12 O’clock High Model is an excellent exercise for diagnosing both organizational and team dynamics. It provides a framework for discussion on how to improve these dynamics. The conversation focuses on individual needs, concerns and interests. Sympathy and empathy are important, as well as communicating to individual team members assurances of their value as individuals and a desire for positive outcomes for them.
Be patient. Don’t try to develop all the answers immediately. Listen and learn what drives employees – particularly the most valuable employees and those who show the greatest potential for development. Listen for what motivates them and meets their needs. Involve them in developing programs to drive the future. Organize rewards and recognition around what motivates them.

]]>With this much diversity in styles of Yoga, a new student would be wise to do a significant amount of research, before beginning a practice. Yet, many people do more research about the features of their new cell phone, than they do before walking into a new Yoga class.
Outside of India, Hatha Yoga, and its sub-styles, are the most well-known styles. The Hatha sub-styles are known by names, such as: Sivananda, Iyengar, Restorative, Viniyoga, Kripalu, Bikram, and many more. These styles vary, in comparison, from extremely physical to therapeutic.
With that said, it is always best to cover your concerns with a prospective Yoga teacher, and find out if the style taught will meet your needs. New students, and those who have pre-existing injuries, should arrive early (at least 20 minutes before class time) in order to complete forms, and discuss any health concerns.
Some Yoga schools have very informative web sites, but the Internet appearance of a studio cannot give you an accurate indication of what it is like to participate in a class. Some schools have much to offer, while some may not cater to the needs of students, as individuals.
There are a number of rights students need to be aware of. The doors of the studio are not bolted shut. You have the right to leave at any time; especially, if you are feeling a complete lack of compassion on the part of your Yoga teacher. In fact, you have legal rights to prevent being harassed. As a student, you have the right to talk to your teacher – especially, if you have health concerns, about any Yogic techniques.
The student and teacher relationship is founded on mutual respect. If a Yoga teacher does not show courtesy toward students, do you really want to be in this class? A Yoga instructor’s ability to observe, give compassionate advice, and make timely assists, speaks volumes about the quality of instruction you will receive.
Credentials mean absolutely nothing if a Yoga teacher has no regard for the safety of his or her students. No amount of certification, registration, or accreditation can make up for a Yoga instructor, who leaves students in harm’s way.

]]>This month though I discovered a new way for my career coaching clients to find their passion. Although the circumstances are not what I would wish for anyone, everyone has tough times at some time in their lives so this might work for you too.
My mother who is 96 came down with bronchitis at the end of September. Two days after the doctor had diagnosed her she got worse so I called an ambulance to take her to the hospital.
She spent a week in the hospital sleeping most of the time. She woke only for meals or to say hello to me when she became aware that I was there. She was extremely weak and tired.
The next week they moved her to a rehabilitation hospital and diagnosed her with pneumonia. As her condition got worse she began to think she would always be bedridden. She told the doctor if she could not go to her bridge games each week she had no reason to live! It was another week before we saw any signs that she was getting better.
Recovery was very slow. All that time she basically slept and ate a little-mostly slept. There was only one other activity that she consistently did each day and that was the daily bridge game in the newspapers. Each day I would bring the newspapers and sick as she was she managed to muster up enough energy to play the hand in the papers before going back to sleep. Clearly she has a passion for bridge.
Needless to say I was concerned about my mother and so I stayed at the hospital most of the day. The only things I attended to were my client coaching calls and newsletter writing.
From these two activities I got amazing relief from the stress. Once I began a coaching call or started to write an article for my newsletter everything else vanished and I could think about only what I was doing. Other activities did not hold my attention. I had 300 messages in my email most of which were opened only after she got better!
So if you are having trouble finding your passion, look at the activities that give you pleasure even when times are tough. Ask yourself what gives you relief when you have a big problem. The answer to that question probably holds the key to what you are passionate about.
Look for something that you enjoy like bridge for my mother and newsletter writing and career coaching for me. It will be something that absorbs in a way that makes you forget your troubles-something you want to continue forever and that makes everything else bearable.
