How To Find Out How To Dress For An Ambiguous Date
We have all been on those kinds of dates–those ambiguous kind of dates where not only is your relationship confusing and undefined, but you also don’t even know how to dress.
Well, trust me, I know much anxiety that can cause, and while I cannot give you impeccable emotional advice to help you sort out your relationship, I can give you some pointers so you can get your getup exactly right for one of those slippery dates.
If the cause of your confusion comes from your lack of knowledge about the activity or event that constitutes the date–like a concert or a party, for example–there is no shame in giving your date a call or sending a text message just to ask about dress code.
After all, it is embarrassing for both parties on a date if one of them is over or underdressed. If the event is particularly vague (like the aforementioned party, perhaps planned by his friends), it is strictly his duty to find out since the outfit for a dinner party and the one for a movie night are drastically different.
If you aren’t in a position where simply asking your date will relieve the uncertainty, then look up the restaurant where you are having dinner online. Is this a neighborhood taco joint or an upscale private place?
Chances are, it is somewhere in between. But even in the average ten-to-fifteen-dollar-a-plate restaurant, there is a great degree of flexibility for how you might need to dress. For example, many steakhouses fall in this category, but the ambiance from one steakhouse to the next can be drastically different.
So, you might cheat a little. Visit the venue beforehand, even if it is just with a friend to grab an appetizer. Look at how other people are dressed. Some online reviews might indicate what kind of atmosphere you will find, so it might be helpful to check there first, especially if you don’t have time to pay a preliminary visit.
The ultimate key is to not overdo it! Certainly wear whatever makes you feel confident, but remain comfortable. This is particularly important when it comes to the shoes you select.
Clark Wallabees, Rocket Dogs, Doc Martens, and other brands all produce classy but comfortable shoes that will look great while keeping you on your toes for that romantic walk in the park after dinner.
Ultimately, be who you are. Don’t try too hard to portray an image that isn’t you. Relax–smile! That is your best accessory.
