Understanding the General Educational Development
Some students, for whatever reason, do not complete high school and obtain a diploma. Today, high school diplomas are critical to being accepted into college.
Thus, an individual’s educational career hinges on whether he gets a high school diploma. Not having that diploma can seem to be an insurmountable barrier which prevents one from achieving the goals one has for work and career.
However, it should be known that not graduating from high school is not the end of the road for these students. The General Educational Development, or GED, affords individuals the opportunity to earn a degree which is comparable to a high school diploma.
The GED is given in test format to those who wish to obtain the degree. There are five subject areas within the test.
Language arts are the first subject area covered in the test. This section of the test is divided into two elements.
The first part is designed to examine the test-takers grammatical ability. Questions related to sentence structure and other such areas are incorporated in this section.
The second part of the Language Arts section asks the test-taker to compose a short essay which will be evaluated on its clarity and structure. The test-takers write about a given topic for approximately 45 minutes.
The next section of the test concerns the subject of social studies. Questions related to American and world history are to be found in this section.
The test-take should also expect to find questions about geography and economics in the social studies section. Altogether, there are 50 questions.
The third section covers several branches of science which are taught in high schools. These branches are physical, earth, life, and space science.
The test-taker should be familiar with the various processes that are present in the physical world. There are 45 questions in this section.
Language arts are again covered in the fourth section. Rather than testing the individual’s ability to write, this section tests the individual’s ability to read.
Several passages are given for the test-taker to read. After reading these passages, the individual must answer 40 questions concerning them.
The questions are designed to examine the comprehension of the test-taker. The final section concerns the subject of math.
Of the 50 questions in this section, 40 are multiple-choice. The other 10, however, require the test-taker to demonstrate his math abilities.
The GED can be taken in thousands of locations across the country. Many communities offer adult education courses.
If your community does offer these classes, you can be pretty sure that the GED is also offered there. The test is also offered at certain educational institutions.
Check with local community colleges in your area to determine whether the GED is offered there. In some areas, it may be offered by the local high school as well.
The environment in which the test is taken is similar to that of any standardized test. In order to ensure that test-takers do not cheat, there are constraints placed on what items and tools can be brought into the room where the test is administered.
In addition, various adaptations of the test are administered. Thus, a person who would try to cheat will be unable to memorize the answers for the test.
The cost of taking the test varies from state to state and from location to location. If you like, you can ask around to determine which location will charge you the least.
Furthermore, some special regulations apply in certain states. In one state, a person under the age of 21 may not be charged to take the examination.
There are also special adaptations of the test that allow persons with disabilities to take the exam. If you are disabled, consult with the testing facility to find out whether they are equipped to administer the test in the recommended way for your disability.
Before you take the test, you should be sure to study those subjects on which you will be tested. There are materials available for purchase to those who are planning on taking the GED.
There may also be a class in which you might enroll that will help you to prepare to take the test. However you choose to prepare, make sure to learn all you can before you undergo the examination.
