Considering Why People Return to Earn a GED
Due to the stresses and challenges that come in high school, many high school students come to a point where they question whether it is all worth it. They wonder if pursuing a GED, or General Education Diploma, is really worth all of the effort.
A GED indicates that a person has obtained a certain level of education either through four years of high school or through completing a test. This test is not available online for those who chose not to finish their schooling at an earlier point or for those who could not finish while a teenage for some reason.
This test was first created in 1942 to help students who did not finish because they still helped their parents on the farm. There are many reasons that a person may go back and take this test later in order to earn a GED.
One of the top reasons that someone may do this is because their options for employment will increase tremendously. Many people go back to finish when their current employment is terminated and they cannot seem to obtain another position due to their seeming lack of education.
Others simply become dissatisfied with their current position and want to have a chance at obtaining a better job. Most employers simply will not hire a person unless he or she has at least a high school education.
They want smart people who are educated and who can contribute to their company and make it better. In addition, despite other reasons for not finishing, most employers assume that someone who has not finished is simply lazy and did not want to put in the work.
Lack of a GED not only hinders your ability to find employment, but it can limit your advancement within a certain field. Even if you have had years of experience in an area where someone else does not, but has finished high school, the other person may be promoted before you.
This can be quite frustrating. It is also another reason that people decide to continue their education. As high school must be finished before college, lack of a GED can also hurt your chances of getting into college if you would like higher education.
Many high school students become fed up with the work and they do not think that they want a college education. However, they realize later how much they really do want an education but in order to get it, they have to go back and get a General Education Diploma.
A General Education Diploma allows you to set higher employment and educational goals that you would otherwise be able to pursue. Another thing that it does is boost your self esteem.
Earning at least a high school degree can give someone a great sense of accomplishment, which can motivate a person to go on and pursue a degree from an institute of higher education. In addition, they can feel more confident when they enter an office to apply for a job that they really want.
Another draw to earn this diploma is the money that is involved. Even though it requires a lot of hard work, you will get paid for your hard work later.
Research has found that those who earn one of these diplomas earn $200,000 more than those who gave up. This can be very important if you are thinking about raising a family, as children can be quite expensive.
Another reason that some students do not finish is that they feel like school hinders their freedom. They want to be able to choose whether they go to school or not and because they feel like they are forced to attend classes, they prove they have a choice by not attending.
However, in the end, they realize that attending would have offered them more freedom in the end. At this point, they go back and earn a GED so that they can live a freer adult life.
Research has shown that half of all high school dropouts end up in prison at one point or another during their life. This may because they do not have enough money and they have to resort to stealing, but whatever the reason, spending time in prison is a waste of time.
Earning a General Education Diploma will also encourage your children to do the same thing. By becoming successful yourself, you will also be able to set your children up for success as well.
