Deciding What Items to Take With You to College

Going to college for the first time is extremely exciting, and requires lots of planning. Making sure that you bring the right things with you is essential, while making sure that you do not bring too much.

After all, your room will only be so big, and can accommodate only so many things, comfortably. Remember that your roommates will be bringing many things as well-it is a good idea to try to coordinate what each of you is bringing, so you do not have to many repeats of the same thing in a small area.

The last thing you want it to get to college and realize that you do not have many of the items that you need. Sometimes home is too far away to be able to go get them, and buying items that you forgot can be taxing on you budget, not to mention wasteful.

One of the most important things that one should keep in mind while moving to a new college is to carry your ID card, and the keys of your dorm room with you at all times. It is wise to file all important papers and documents and keep them in a place that is safe, private, and protected at all times.

If you are in a different country, you will want to know where your documentation and visa are at all times. You may want to get a lock box, or some other kind of private storage device for these necessary things.

In addition to this, make sure that you have all of the notebooks you will need for taking notes, along with binders, pens, pencils, erasers, staplers with pins, printer paper and ink, and other stationary type things you need. You can buy many if not all of these things at your college bookstore to save on room, but they will most likely be more expensive if you do.

Sometimes knowing what you will need comes down to trial and error. You may find that you like a very particular kind of binder or notebook, and you dislike all others-try a couple different things when you begin, and see what you like the most.

It is a good idea to get some plastic containers, perhaps even ones with sliding drawers, to store your jewelry, toiletries, medicines, food items, and much more. You may find that there are many things that you will need to be able to store, and put out of the way.

Having a shoe organizer is also a good idea, since you will most likely not have a big closet. Preserving space becomes essential, and you will need to do everything you can to save room.

An over the door rack is always a good idea. Since it keeps your shoes up and out of the way. There are also hanging racks that attach to your closet rod, which work well.

Toiletries are something which you would not want to keep borrowing from your friends. Therefore, it is important that you keep your shampoos, soaps, conditioners, and towels separate.

You may want a kind of bin to store them in, so they are separate from your roommate’s things. You may also want a bathrobe for privacy, especially if there is a group bathroom in a dormitory.

Make sure that you know if you need to clean your apartment yourself, or if a cleaning service will be provided. If you do your own cleaning, as is in most cases, you will need to bring the right cleaning supplies with you.

This is something you may want to split the cost of between roommates, since you will all use them. Make sure you have all of the things you need to keep your apartment clean for cleaning checks.

It is always a good idea to have first aid supplies on hand for if you get sick or hurt. You will not have a parent there to care for you, and you will need to have the medicines, pain reliever, band-aids, rubbing alcohol, etc. that you may need to take care of yourself.

College can be a very fun and enjoyable experience, especially when you are prepared. Make sure that you take inventory of all the items you may need before you go, and plan if you are going to bring them with you, or buy them when you get there.
