Increasing Amount of Product Recalls Due to Burn Hazards

The Consumer Product Safety Commission last week recalled two separate products because of potential burn hazards. In the first recall, the CPSC announced a voluntary recall of Golden tea lights for fire risks. According to the recall notice, about 350,000 tea lights that were imported by Pier 1 Imports of Fort Worth, Texas have been included in the recall. The recall has been announced because the flame from the tea lights can be very high, posing a potential burn hazard.

According to the CPSC, the company has received at least four reports of tealights burning with a high flame. One of these incidents ended with a minor burn. The tea lights were sold by Tier Imports from September 2002 January 2011. The CPSC is warning consumers to stop using the recalled units immediately, and return them for a free replacement. The same recall has also been announced in Canada, and involves 30,000 units.

The second product being recalled for potential burn and fire hazards are remote control systems manufactured by Florida -based Niles Audio Corporation. According to the company, if the battery falls from the remote control during operation, it can actually rupture and ignite. This can lead to potential fire hazards. According to the company, it has received at least four reports of batteries falling from the remote control, smoking and igniting while the person was handling the remote. In one case the carpet was singed, and in the other three cases, the battery smoked after falling onto the floor.

Remote control systems involved in this recall include the Niles iRemote TS and the ic2 remote control systems. These wireless remote control systems are used to operate audio video and home entertainment systems from a single remote control. The products are manufactured in China. The CPSC is advising all consumers to stop using the default remote control systems immediately, and contact the company to schedule in-home repairs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is seeking information about any burn injuries or other injuries that have resulted from the use of either of these products.

Every year, California burn injury lawyers find millions of products including ovens, stoves, gas ranges, coffee and tea makers and kettles recalled for burn hazards. In these cases, the hazards are created by defective design and shoddy manufacturing of the product. In 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled millions of women’s bathrobes after these burst into flames. At least three such incidents resulted in deaths, and more women were injured when their chenille flammable bath robes erupted into flames. Burn injuries are some of the most serious personal injuries that can occur, and also some of the most traumatic.
