Providing For Cold Condition Workers
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued may rules and regulations to business and companies that are intended to protect workers from various safety hazards. One of the areas that this list of rules and regulations addresses is working in the cold.
There are many illnesses and injuries that can occur from working in the cold. It is important that employers take as many precautions as possible to protect their employees while they work in low temperature conditions so that they do not suffer from these illnesses and injuries.
Some of the things that should be protected against are hypothermia, frostbite, and trench foot. These things are all developed simply from being out in the cold too long.
Cold-water immersion or extremely lengthy exposure to low temperatures can also lead to death. There are many physical indications that someone will give off if they are close to or suffering from these cold related conditions.
These signs include uncontrolled shivering, slurred speech, clumsy movements, fatigue and otherwise confused behavior because they are not able to think clearly. Employees should be notified of these signs and if they notice that a coworker is showing some of these signs, they should call for emergency help immediately.
These conditions should not be allowed to continue to long or the person could suffer permanent side effects from it. Employers should carefully evaluate the working conditions before putting their employees at risk.
However, if the work still needs to be done and the low temperature conditions are quite regular, an employer should carefully evaluate the environment and eliminate any risks that can be taken away. They should also learn the signs of cold related illnesses and injuries so that they know when and how to help workers.
It is also the employer’s responsibility to make sure that all of the workers are trained to watch out for and treat these conditions. They should also make sure that all employees are properly dressed to work in these dangerous conditions.
If an employee cannot afford the necessary equipment, it is important for the company to provide the necessary clothing. This clothing should protect against the cold, wind, and water.
It should also be applicable in layers so that workers can easily change according to weather changes. It is also important that workers are allowed to take a lot of breaks when the temperatures are extreme so that they can have a chance to warm their bodies up.
Of course, the company should provide heated shelters for these breaks. Otherwise, the employees will have nowhere to warm themselves up.
It is also a good idea to provide snacks or food as it can help make sure that their bodies have enough energy to keep their body temperature up. Employers should also work to make sure that their employees work during the warmest parts of the day when cold conditions exist.
Employees should also not be forced to work until exhaustion. When they become really tired or fatigued, their bodies will struggle to work hard enough to keep their muscles warm.
Not only does this risk a drop in body temperature which will make the worker more prone to developing a cold related disease, but it makes it more likely that the employee will develop muscle cramps.
Muscle cramps can lead to further, more severe injuries if he or she keeps working or they can be severe enough that the worker will no longer be able to work until he or she recovers. Another way to make sure that all of your employees are properly cared for is to make sure that everyone works in pairs.
This way, they will be able to watch out for each other and make sure that they are not suffering from cold related illness. Another thing that can help prevent this illness is to provide warm, sweet drinks such as hot chocolate.
The warmth will help your employees warm up and the sugar will help them keep their body temperature up. However, you should avoid providing drinks that contain caffeine and alcohol.
If you are responsible for providing meals, you may also want to consider providing warm, high calories meals such as pasta dishes. These things can also help your workers survive the cold conditions.
It is also a good idea to closely monitor those who take certain medications, are in poor physical condition, or suffer from certain illnesses. Those who are already physically weak may have difficulty working in the cold conditions.
