Properly Cleaning Your Blinds

Blinds are a very popular covering for windows. They can be easily cleaned and managed for whether you want the window open or closed or the room dark or light.

You can peak through them to see what the weather is like without opening the entire window. One of the most popular types of blinds is vertical blinds.

Vertical blinds tend to remind people more of draperies because they are hanging and can move with the wind. Horizontal blinds do not move as easily although both types can control light and temperature.

In addition, vertical blinds are generally the better option for large windows because they can more easily cover the window. Horizontal blinds do not usually come in large sizes and they are more ideal for smaller windows.

In particular, vertical blinds are recommended for sliding glass doors and French doors since they can move to the side like the door will. Vertical blinds are also designed to fit a variety of tastes because there are several different types which are made out of different materials.

Some of the most common materials that vertical blinds are made out of are fabric, vinyl, aluminum, and wood. The fabric kind can be easily taken down and washed while the other kinds have to be wiped down.

The proper maintenance of the blinds is very important because they are always much easier to clean, when they have been cleaned recently. Dirt and grime that has been on the blinds for a long period of time tends to get stuck there.

Over time the dirt becomes much harder to get off. However, if you cleaned the blinds two weeks ago, if will be much easier to clean off the most recent dirt.

The longer you wait to clean, the longer and more difficult it will be to clean. In turn, the more and more discouraged you will become when it comes to cleaning them and the longer you will wait before you try to clean them again.

This is a downward spiraling process. The best time to start a routine cleaning maintenance of your blinds is right when you buy them.

They are cleanest at this moment in time and they will be the easiest to keep clean. Even if vertical blinds do not show a whole lot of dust, they still need to be cleaned.

If a day comes when you do not have time to clean the blinds, you should at least dust them. One of the easiest ways to clean the blinds efficiently is to attach the brush tool to your vacuum.

Some people find that they move into a new house to discover that the blinds are very dirty. As a result, you are forced to clean the blinds.

It is likely that these blinds will need to be deeply cleaned. The best way to deeply clean vertical blinds is to take them down.

This way you do not have to clean the window afterwards and you can put pressure on them to scrub them clean. Vinyl and aluminum blinds should be cleaned with a sponge, soap, and water.

This is the most effective cleaning solution unless you are working with rusted aluminum. Most vertical blinds can take some pressure without breaking.

Most of them will bend right back into shape. However, if you are too rough, you can break them.

When you are done cleaning them, make sure you rinse them off to remove any cleaning solution. It is best to deep clean blinds during the summer when it is nice and warm.

However, this is not always an option. If you have to clean indoors, the bathroom is generally the best option as long as the floor or tub is clean.

In addition to the cleaning solution, you can add bleach to the mixture for white blinds to help restore their ‘new’ white look. Blinds can be scratched so it is very important that you do not use abrasive cleaners.

Wood blinds are particularly vulnerable to this as they are often covered in varnish. Even though the blinds can dry hanging up, it is a very good idea to dry them with a towel before you put them back up.

Otherwise, they will drip on the carpet and could cause mold if the area is not well ventilated. If your blinds are fabric, check the instructions and clean them the recommended way.

Hot water is the best cleaner for wood blinds as soaps and other cleaners may be too harsh for the varnish. You do not want to accidentally remove the varnish.
